“So here I was, this little high school senior – short skirt, cute hair – and my driver was (former University of Oklahoma President) George Cross. “You got to remember that there weren’t even women in Rotary yet,” Paden said. The honor included a trip, chauffeured by one the club’s members, to a weekly meeting. “Rotary is a big deal in the rest of the world.”Ībout 10 years after the pocket knife and the tape measure, Paden was selected as the Rotary Club student of the month while at the now-defunct University High School in Norman, Okla. It’s the impact we have on the community. “We’ve grown in membership to become the world’s largest (Rotary) club, but I think it’s not just the number. “I’m really proud of what we’ve done this year,” Paden said. Boasting more than 600 members, it is the largest Rotary club of more than 34,000 clubs worldwide. Rotary Club 29, or Downtown Rotary as it is more commonly known, was founded in 1910 and has philanthropically served the metro area since its inception. Now decades later, Paden is in her 21st year as a member and in her final week as president of the club. Paden didn’t know it at the time, but the tape measure would be her first of many encounters with the club she would go on to lead. The grandfather – Paden’s grandfather Marion Rushton – was a longtime member of the Rotary Club in Montgomery. “You know, boys get pocket knives girls get sewing machines,” said Marion Paden, Rotary Club 29 president and vice president for enrollment and student services at Oklahoma City Community College. The knife went to the grandson to be used as little boys use such things, and the tape measure went to the granddaughter to go in her sewing kit. They were gifts from a grandfather to his grandchildren – mementos emblazoned with a golden, six-spoke cogwheel, the emblem of Rotary International. It started in Montgomery, Ala., with a pocket knife and a tape measure.
